The Secret of Amazon Women

Have you ever heard of Amazon women? Where do you think they lived? If you thought of the Amazon river, think again. Amazon river was called this way because Spaniards thought they’ve met at last the legendary tribe of Amazon women. They’ve soon realized their mistake, but the river kept the name.

The first mention of Amazon women in historical records belongs to the Greek historian and geographer Herodotus. Some time around 450 BC, he visited Scythian lands north of the Black sea. Greeks knew Scythians very well as fierce nomad warriors who were real trouble for Greek colonies. “Trouble” means that Scythes periodically sacked Greek colonies, and Greeks could not do much about that. The famous Scythian burial mounds contained a lot of Greek gold items that rightfully take place in many museums around the world.

Greeks and Romans subdued a lot of people and lands. The vast Empire of Alexander the Great spread as far as Afghanistan and border of India. Romans ruled Spain, France, Britain. Not to mention Greece, Syria, Judea, and even Egypt. For some other people like Teutons and Scythes they resorted to the containment strategy. It’s just they were a little too fierce.

It was Scythes who told Herodotus about fierce woman warriors living nearby from them in what’s now southeastern Russian steppes.
